What Is Artificial Intelligence? A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding AI

| Updated on 6 January 2025

For me, AI meant ChatGPT only. However, now things have changed and the meaning of AI for me has evolved significantly. I used to think that AI was some new invention, but it was only a few weeks ago when I came to know that in the 1990s, ML and data-driven approaches were already in focus (Bernard Marr).

Fast-forward to the current scenario, AI and ML are two keys that are needed in almost every modern software or tool to stay relevant in the competition. But, how does this tech have managed to gain that much limelight? Well, the answer is the value and accessibility it adds to the user experience.

If you are curious to know more about the subject, keep reading the article till the end.

History of Artificial Intelligence: From an Idea to Reality

history of AI timeline

The foundation of thought of artificial intelligence was back in 1943. The period between 1943-1952 is known as the “maturation of artificial intelligence”. In this timeline, the “thought” of AI began to reflect itself in some small experiments and practical applications. This was the first time when researchers across the world believed it to become a reality.

Next, from 1952 to 1956, the period is considered the “birth of artificial intelligence”. During this period, the official groundwork to develop this tech began. By the end of the period, AI finally coined its presence in the academic field.

Fast-forward to the years 1993-2011, this time came with marvelous development in AI and computer applications. Also, all these efforts were made to help the computer program achieve human-level intelligence.

Now in current times, deep learning, big data, and artificial general intelligence are the main focus of the industry. Modern applications, networks, programs, etc. are using AI and ML to improve their operations and work on better efficiency.

Industries Where AI is Used Actively

Interestingly, AI is a great tool that helps all organizations across different industries. Be it the construction, healthcare, finance, or any other industries. The following are such industries where the tech is widely used:

1. AI in Education, Gaming, & Training

A majority of students are already aware of artificial intelligence programs and how it can help them. Speaking of professional courses, various institutions and organizations are teaching artificial intelligence and its concepts.

Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Upgrad, Skillshare, etc. are some examples of online platforms that let students enroll in such AI and ML courses to upgrade their skill set.

Along with that, students also like to use AI in gaming to kill their free time. For instance, Minimumdepsitcasinos.org helps gamers to have an extra edge over their competition and win the match with ease.

2. AI in Banking and Financial Services

Banks and financial institutes generally use AI and ML algorithms to find financial fraud in the program. These programs track transactions and other activities in real time and analyze their pattern. Thanks to the huge data collected by these programs and with their protocols, it has now become much easier to detect fraud.

3. AI in Manufacturing

Heavy machinery in manufacturing units tends to go through massive wear and tear in a short span of time. This is why, computer scientists have been able to develop AI programs that are able to detect such defects as well.

One of the most advanced companies, Siemens, is a major player in using AI in their manufacturing operations.

4. AI in Hospitality

Hotels around the globe are also taking part actively and integrating AI into their daily operations. If you have recently visited any luxury hotel, AI is all around your smart room controls, energy management systems, and customer problem resolutions.

With such efforts with respect to their daily operations, AI is playing an active role in making things easier for both organizations and their clients. Thanks to this, the future of AI also seems quite bright and cheerful.

AI According to Critiques: Boon or Bane?

Despite all these advanced features and accessibility, AI also brings some looses and downsides along. The following are a few of them:

  • AI brings bias in its response when asked about an issue. Depending on various factors, such as the developer who developed the program or others, the responses may have a leaning factor.
  • Due to its accessibility and productivity, the increase in the use of AI also brings huge job losses and layoffs in various industries.

End Note

Finally, AI is truly a blessing for various business owners and students across the globe. The tech makes everything easy and more accessible with its advance features. However, AI also brings some disadvantages that I shared with you in this article. If you find my writing helpful,
