Google is discontinuing Chromecast after more than a decade. The company is phasing out this hardware device to make way for the new Google TV streamer.
Unlike the small dongle design of Chromecast, the new TV streamer features a traditional set-top-box design. The company said that the new streaming device offers more performance and supports 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
For now, the device is only available in the US for pre-orders and it is priced at $99.99. Google will start shipping the device from September 24.
When it comes to the design, the company revealed that the new device is supposed to sit in front of the TV instead of being tucked behind. The device is available in two colors for now, Porcelain and Hazel. It features a sleek low-profile form as you can see from the image above.
Google has also redesigned the remote and now it comes with improved ergonomics with a new button layout optimized for hands of all sizes. The new remote also features a button that would allow users to open their preferred app.
Now, let’s look at some of the details of this new TV streamer from Google. The company said that the new device offers access to over 7,00,000 movies and shows through streaming apps like YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV, and more. Apart from this, it will also allow users to access over 800 live channels. It will also use Google AI to curate content suggestions across app subscriptions based on users’ preferences.
