Reportedly, Apple has been working on its own in-house 5G and Wi-Fi chips for years now. According to reports, it seems that all that research and development has come to fruition and Apple is likely to introduce the hardware in the upcoming iPhone SE 4 and iPads.
According to a recent report by Digitimes, the tech giant plans to debut its new Wi-Fi chip in at least the iPad in 2025. On the other hand, the iPhone SE 4 is likely to be launched with a new 5G modem.
iPhone SE 4 is slated to release in the first half of 2025 with the new 5G modem. After that, select models in the iPhone 17 series can also potentially feature that modem. After that, the new modem will eventually be rolled out to the rest of the Apple lineup of devices.
In the case of new Wi-Fi chips, we might start seeing them from iPhone 18 onwards.
Some might ask, why would Apple do this? Well, this will significantly reduce the cost for Apple. They had to pay the licensing fee to companies like Qualcomm that designed the current chips Apple uses. It has been known in the tech circles that Apple has been trying its best to move away from its dependence on Qualcomm for some time.
Well, if Apple comes up with its own Wi-Fi chips, then it might also release a line of routers. It means that they will revive a product line that is dead for now.
In simple words, it will give Apple more control over its supply chain. This might be the main motivating factor for Apple to do this. This way, Apple can better control the upcoming features and capabilities of its devices.
