Sony is offering gamers a delightful dose of nostalgia on the occasion of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, extending beyond the quickly sold-out retro hardware. On Monday, a software update was released that introduced the classic boot screen along with themes that represent each generation of console hardware.
Sony’s introduction suggested that the users can select the generation they prefer which would lead to a menu that presents theming options for the PS1 through PS4. Upon installing the update, the users will be prompted to make a selection the first time they begin their console.
Additional themes can be explored in a new ‘PlayStation 30th Anniversary’’ section which is located at the top of the settings of the console menu. Unfortunately, Sony has indicated that these themes will only be available for a limited time period, although the exact duration has not been specified.
The choice to not offer them permanently appears to be a missed opportunity and it looks like someone in Sony’s marketing department prioritized creating a sense of scarcity or minimizing clutter in the settings menu over allowing users to customize the dashboard. This was done to evoke memories of classic titles such as Crash Bandicoot or Metal Gear Solid.
A simpler version of this initiative was undertaken a decade ago during the 20th anniversary of PlayStation when a complimentary theme in 2014 offered PS4, PS3 and Vita with the aesthetic and startup sound of the PS1.
While the fans are highly anticipating that the 30th-anniversary consols and accessories will be the highlight of the celebrations of Sony. A recent PS5 update surprised users by introducing new theme options and a nostalgic startup screen that takes back to the original PlayStation era.
Users can now customize the background and audio of the console to reflect several generations including PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4.
