We all know that Reddit posts can be unbelievably long, and sometimes it’s challenging for users to figure out what exactly they are about. Even if you understand the title, figuring out long Reddit threads can be extremely challenging.
Reddit wants to address this concern of users by introducing AI to the mix. Later this year, they plan to release a new AI-powered feature on the platform that will help generate summaries at the top of search results.
The idea is simple, use AI to summarize big chunks of data on Reddit Threads. The current generation of AI models is good at condensing and summarizing big chunks of text. With summaries part of the Reddit search results, users will be able to find the relevant content quickly.
Here is how Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman explained it.
“Reddit’s content is uniquely valuable and becoming more important in the context of Internet search. Users run over 1 billion search queries a month on Reddit today, and our product work is improving the search experience and success rate on the platform. Later this year, we will begin testing new search result pages powered by AI to summarize and recommend content, helping users dive deeper into product shows, games and discover new communities on Reddit.”
Now, the question is how they will do it.
Huffman said that the company will use both first-party and third-party models to produce accurate and relevant information.
Now, the third-party element here is interesting as Reddit has closed off access to its data for most AI companies. The company only has deals with Google and OpenAI for data sharing. Also, Reddit has a separate deal with OpenAI to use its models for AI-powered features on Reddit.
Well, this feature would make Reddit a great place for users who don’t want to search the whole thread on their own.
