Rockstar’s upcoming title has been previously discussed in terms of its advanced graphics capabilities however specific details were not available then. The recent information indicates that GTA VI will indeed include reay-traced global illumination. The LinkedIn post that now has been modified to omit these particulars also stated that some level of procedural generation can also be incorporated into the game.
This information has only been available because of /u/ForwardMedicine7905, a user on Reddit who captured a screenshot of the original post on LinkedIn. The individual who is responsible for the post, Ryan Woods is not just an intern but is also a skilled programmer.
Woods has an impressive background, he has worked with EA, Obsidian and Insomniac Games mostly in engine programming and rendering roles. He also served as the lead engine programmer at Insomniac both the 2016 Ratchet & Clank and the title Marvel’s Spider-Man released in 2018.
Both these titles are known for their visual excellence and optimization which is also expected for GTA 6, especially when Woods has been working with Rockstar as a principal engine programmer for four years. His experience put forward the belief that GTA 6 is going to make use of the RAGE engine of Rockstar and will push all the limits of real-time processing and rendering specifically on gaming consoles.
There are no expectations for the addition of ray-tracing and ray-traced global illumination (RTGI). Titles such as the Silent Hill 2 remake, Alan Wak 2 and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, have already implemented RTGI even on console platforms.
