As per reports by Expreview, Seagate has unveiled its largest hard drive to date, boasting an impressive 32TB capacity that was made possible by the innovative Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology.

It has been around a year since Seagate announced the development of a hard drive that uses HAMR technology and is built on its new Mozaic 3+ platform. The anticipation for a HAMR HDD has been building since Seagate started exploring this technology back in 2007.

For over a decade now, the company has forecasted the arrival of HAMr-based drives but these predictions repeatedly fell short until now. Initially, Exos drives using the Mozaic 3+ platform were accessible and available only to a selected group of customers that too in limited quantities.

However, the general release of the drive is now on the horizon because of the ramped-up production efforts. In conjunction with this, Seagate secretively launched the product page for its Exos M HDDs which feature a 32TB model that employs Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR). Along with this, it also has a 30TB variant that uses Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR).

It looks like there are uncertainties at Seagate regarding the exact designation of its HDD, whether it is Exos M 3+ or Exos M. The product page refers to it simply as Exos M which is also echoed by a video on the official YouTube channel of Seagate

However, the URL suggests ‘exos-m-3-plus’ and the video title mentions Exos M 3+, Seagate has been contacted for clarification on the name.

Right now, the main rival of Seagate in the high-capacity HDD market is Western Digital which brought ePMR-based drives in October including a 32TB model. While Seagate is the first to launch its 32TB HAMR drive, WD appeared to have achieved a broader release sooner with both companies competing in the capacity arena.
