Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Frame Rate is a Huge Disappointment

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, a 2024 action-adventure game developed by Nintendo, is officially here. It is the first main Legend of Zelda game with Princess Zelda as the playable character. The frame rate of the long-awaited game has been a big problem from a technical perspective so far. Critics are not happy specifically with the resolution on the Nintendo Switch.

Unfortunately, the frame rate is even worse than the Grezzo’s remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Those who hoped for a smooth 60 FPS experience might have been disappointed. The game is still plagued by unstable performance, a blight that affected many fan’s enjoyment. It bounces between 60 and 30 FPS as users play. This is likely due to a reliance on a double buffer vertical sync.

Essentially, the game will maintain 60 FPS when you are standing motionless or just moving around your camera. But as soon as you begin navigating Zelda’s surroundings, the frame rate nearly immediately drops to as low as 30 frames per second. One possible explanation is that while you move around, in-level data is nearly always being streamed by the game.  Another important observation is that the overworld is larger, more complex, and seamless than that of Link’s Awakening.

However, Digital Foundry claims that overall, it accomplishes a lot of things well and that its experimental gameplay might be sufficient to fix the frame rate issues on its own.
