Apple has announced the launch of its Maps service on the web for the first time as a public beta to rival Google Maps. This means that users can now access Apple Maps right from their browsers.
This launch of Apple Maps puts the company in direct competition with Google Maps, which has been long available on the web. This is a significant step for Apple as now they are looking for an audience away from their ecosystem.
The web beta supports walking and driving directions as of now, however, biking directions are only available on mobile versions. One thing to note here is that, for now, users cannot access Apple Maps beta on Android devices or Safari on iPhones. They may add the support in the future or not.
Here is what Apple said about Maps being available on the web.
“Now, users can get driving and walking directions; find great places and useful information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews; take actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card; and browse curated Guides to discover places to eat, shop, and explore in cities around the world. Additional features, including Look Around, will be available in the coming months.”
Simple features like directions, businesses, points of interest, guides, and more are included in the web interface. The Look Around feature is expected to arrive soon. For now, users won’t be able to log in to the Apple Maps web to access saved places and custom guides. They said that the developers using Market JS can link out to Apple Maps now on the web.
For now, the public beta of Apple Maps is available only for Safari, Edge, and Chrome on Mac devices. On Windows devices, the service is only available on Edge and Chrome.
