They have been enhancing the experience on the Google TV app. For quite some time, they have been increasing the number of free channels available for selection. Now, Google TV is rebranding its free TV channel offerings as FreePlay on TV app.
This new branding was spotted on the Google TV streamer last month. Now, it is appearing on more Android TVs.
It was first reported by 9to5Google that the FreePlay branding was available on Chromecasts and Android TVs.
The US users can now find the new branding in the Google TV app where they offer these free channels.
Well, the name change doesn’t offer new functionality to the app, but it is definitely a hint at things to come for free channels on Google TV.
In the future, Free Play could include another type of free media available on various platforms.
The number of free channels has been growing steadily for the past two years. The platform started with 80 free channels in 2023 and then reached 117 by the end of the year. As of September 2024, the number of channels from Google TV FreePlay stands at an impressive 150.
Well, creating branding for this feature indicates that Google is taking this seriously. They want to increase further in the free content ecosystem on TV.
This could be due to more users shifting towards streaming and leaving cable. Google is presenting itself as a viable option for people who don’t want to use cable in 2024.
