Apple AirTag 2 to launch in 2025

Mark Gurman in his report on Bloomberg stated that Apple is working to bring its second-generation AirTag next year which has been boasted to be a considerably extended range for tracking items. In this latest Power On newsletter, Gurman has revealed that the upcoming AirTag will consist of Apple’s second-gen Ultra Wideband chip or a technology similar to it.

The chip was launched with the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in 2023 and it promised users up to three times the range of the original Ultra Wideband chip which was found in the current AirTag. It is anticipated by Gurman that the new AirTag will indeed deliver triple the tracking distance as compared to the previous ones.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models of Apple feature a Precision Finding Capability which allows users to locate their friends in crowded environments within the range of 60 meters which is around 200 feet. The new AirTag is expected to offer a comparable range for users in location people.

In previous reports, Gurman indicated that the new AirTag is ready to be launched around mid-2025 alongside the enhanced range and he mentioned that the built-in speaker will be more securely attached as a precaution against stalking.

However, he did not notice any major alteration in the design for the accessory in its upcoming update. Despite the anticipation, a redesign is not on the horizon and the next AirTags might maintain a similar look indicating Apple’s satisfaction with the current aesthetic. As for additional features, the details about the AirTag 2 remain sparse, however, some improvements in battery life could be made along with a card-like design that could fit easily into wallets and purses. Since the AirTag was introduced to the users in April 2021, they will have to wait nearly four years for the next one.
