Apple’s focus has shifted towards the much-anticipated iPhone 17 lineup after the release of the iPhone 16 especially due to the Air model’s introduction. As per reports, Apple is now aiming to produce the slimmest iPhone ever made with this series.
In the initial rumours, it was suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would be thinner than its predecessors, the iPhone 16 but in the recent reports it looks like it may be so thin that it may not have a SIM tray at all.
Reports from The Information mention that Apple is thinking of removing the physical SIM cards from iPhone 17 Air in some countries next year, however nowhere it was mentioned which countries will have physical SIM removed. This decision by Apple could potentially impact a broader range of iPhone models as well as the market.
It has also been observed that all the prototypes of the Air model do not consist of a SIM tray which further raised concerns about its sales in China. Apple began this trend in the US with its iPhone 14 series, however, China has still not embraced the concept of e-SIMs. e-SIMs are considered to be more secure than physical SIMs as they cannot be removed or stolen from the device.
Furthermore, up to eight SIMs can be there in an iPhone at once making it easier to travel without the hassle of handling physical SIM cards. Leaked specifications for the iPhone 17 Air suggests some major improvements such as a thinner and a lighter design.
The camera system is expected to have a 48-megapixel primary sense with the ability to boost optical zoom capabilities and AI-driven enhancements for better low-light performance.
The iPhone 17 will be available for users in September 2025 which will provide enough time for new details to emerge and new rumours regarding the device to come up before its launch.
