A significant change has been made by Google to its update policy for the first two generations of Tensor-powered Pixel devices. Additional updates of two years are offered by Google for Pixel 7 series, Pixel 6 series and Pixel Fold.
When Google introduced the Tensor processor with the Pixel 6 series, it also gathered the chance to boost its software support from three years to five years. Earlier, Pixel devices got both security as well as Android OS updates for only three years post-launch however, the latest models are now all set to enjoy an extra two years of security updates.
A lot of users have been curious about the updated schedule and if there would be any revision in the schedule for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 after the announcements for the Pixel and Pixel 9 generations.
Google has also confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series will not have a total of five years of Android OS updates in the update to its support page.
As per Google, these devices also include Pixel Fold, the updates for five years will be beneficial for the devices, which begin from their initial availability in the US on the Google stores. Five years of OS and security updates are included and along with this, advanced features can also be brought up through Pixel Drops.
However, the Pixel table does not include the change and therefore, as of now, Google’s update policy is like this:
Pixel 8, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, etc for seven years and 3 years of Android OS and security updates. 5 years of Android OS and security updates are for the devices, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel Fold.
