Microsoft is delaying its controversial AI feature called Recall. The new Recall feature is an AI-powered history tracker that is supposed to be built into its AI PCs. The company decided to delay the feature after a backlash from the public and security experts.

Microsoft’s executive vice president Yusuf Medhi described Recall as giving the computer a photographic memory. Recall uses local AI models built into Microsoft Windows 11 to screenshot mostly everything you see or do on your computer screen. It is supposed to track everything from voice chats to web browsing. Then allowing the users to search for everything they did in the last few months.

It was supposed to be launched with Copilot+ PC on June 18 but now it will be delayed. The company said that it will not launch on the said date, instead only be available on its Windows Insider Programme.

Here is a quote from the blog post from Microsoft about the Recall launch delay.

“We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security,”

The delay was “rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure, and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users”.

They want to seek additional feedback from the Windows Insider Programme. Once they are satisfied with the feedback, the Recall feature will be made available to all Copilot+ PCs. Its insider program allows Windows users to preview upcoming features.
