A few years back, Mozilla bought the rights to the K-9 mail with the intention of turning it into the Android version of Thunderbird. Now, after a long wait users can finally try out the initial version of Thunderbird on Android.
Mozilla is releasing the Thunderbird email client on Android two years after the initial announcement. Thunderbird is now available in the beta version. Users can go ahead and start testing the beta version.
The Mozilla team now wants users to try out the app by themselves and give them feedback so a full-fledged stable version can be released in the future.
This beta version allows users to test out the core functionalities of the app such as account setup, account switching, email organization, and more.
The new Thunderbird app is built on K-9 mail, but it will not replace it in the app store. It will function as a separate app that you’ll need to migrate to once it is out.
Here are some screenshots of the app.
Go ahead and open the Play Store on your device and download the new Thunderbird email app. Give it a spin by yourself and report on the issues you find on it when testing.
They have made a dedicated Matrix channel available for real-time discussions with other testers and contributors.
We don’t have a timeline for when the stable version of the app will be released. However, we know that it took them two years after the announcement to release a beta version, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they took a few months to release the stable version of the app.
