Nintendo Developers Confirms Interest in Future 2D Zelda Titles

| Updated on 15 November 2024

Even the phenomenal success of both ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ and ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ couldn’t stop the developers at Nintendo from still having a special place for the 2D-style games from the series past in their hearts. In fact, ‘Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’, the top-down of this year, might have shown them that there are still fresh concepts to investigate in the upcoming 2d Zelda titles.

Alongside external studio Grezzo, Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma played a key role in the development of ‘Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’. In his recent interview with BBC, Aonuma mentioned that he often feels like creating something innovative within the framework of 2D Zelda is quite challenging. However, they ultimately figured out a fresh approach in the 2024 spin-off that paid attention to Zelda making use of cloning to solve puzzles.

Aonuma further added that the game made him realize and recognize the other possibilities that exist for Zelda games. While there is nothing decided yet, it looks like the team hopes that they can move forward with their dual approach to developing Zelda games in the coming future. Nintendo producer told BBC that they will also have the dynamic 3D Zelda, additionally they are aspiring to continue making the classic 2D Zelda games.

Ever since the time of the original Game Boy, adventure games have followed two distinct paths, the first one is where console versions advance the frontiers of 3D exploration and the second one is portable versions delving into innovative 2D mechanics.

The periods of Nintendo DS and 3DS specifically were rich in several projects, however with the merger of development processes of the company around the switch, which functions as both a handheld as well as a home console, the 2D aspect appears to have somewhat weakened.
