YouTube viewers who watch content on their smart TVs and don’t have a Premium subscription might start to see more ads on the videos. Reddit users are now complaining about the ads they are seeing when they pause a video on the platform.
Initially, YouTube announced the “Pause ads” format back in May last year and tested it in a few markets across the globe. It seems that YouTube is now rolling that option to more users.

As we can see from the image, the YouTube video shrinks to a small window to the left and the ad shows up in a column on the right side of the screen.
The new ad column on the YouTube Smart TV app has a “Sponsored” label with the brand’s name and logo at the top. Then it has the ad itself, a caption, and some buttons to dismiss the ad or get more information about it.
To remove the ad, you can either do it manually by pressing the Dismiss button or just resume playback. The ad completely disappears from the screen when you resume the playback.
From the looks of it, there seems to be a limited rollout of the feature. However, we can expect it to appear on more users’ TVs as they’ve already been testing this feature for a year now.
For the last year or so, YouTube has been trying various ways to show more ads on the platform. The pause ad option is one of the ad options for them.
