After the arrest of its CEO Pavel Durov, Telegram has been under a lot of pressure. Just two weeks after the arrest, Telegram quietly removed the language from its FAQ page that said private chats were protected from moderation requests.
Two weeks ago, CEO Pavel Durov was arrested by French authorities for allegedly allowing “criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app.”
After his arrest, Durov released the first public statement that promised to moderate content more on the platform. This is a significant shift from his demeanor after initially saying that the company has nothing to hire.
Here is what he wrote in a statement.
“Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We’ve already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon.”
So, some of the changes are already happening and they have changed the company’s FAQ page.
Take a look at the “There’s illegal content on Telegram. How do I take it down?” question on the FAQ page. Its answer was “All Telegram chats and group chats are private amongst their participants. We do not process any requests related to them” on September 5th.
However, now those lines have been removed from the FAQ page and have been replaced with “All Telegram apps have ‘Report’ buttons that let you flag illegal content for our moderators — in just a few taps,” followed by some instructions to report the messages.
