X Must Pay 5 Million in Fines Before Reinstatement in Brazil

| Updated on 4 October 2024

The decision of Elon Musk to stand against a court order in Brazil is going to prove to be costly for X.

We reported last week that Elon and X backed down in Brazil and will comply with the Brazilian censorship demands after opposing the order claiming it was not legal and it violates users’ freedom of speech.

During this debacle, Musk also went offensive against Brazilian leadership, specifically targeting Brazilian Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Musk claimed that the Brazilian Supreme Court’s demands were illegal.

Before all this debacle started, the Brazilian Government requested to ban some users on X. It is speculated that the requests were related to the speculation that the 2022 Brazil election was stolen. This has been disproven by all investigations into the poll.

Musk, a supporter of ousted Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, doesn’t believe that such claims on the platform need to be censored.

However, after weeks of fighting with the government, X finally decided to comply with the order and ban those accounts. However, according to the Supreme Court, X still has to pay accumulated fines before it can be reinstated in the region.

Here is what Reuters reported.

“Brazil’s Supreme Court said on Friday that social platform X still needs to pay just over $5 million in pending fines, including a new one, before it will be allowed to resume its service in the country, according to a court document.”

Well, the fines on X are related to the social media company using a workaround to enable X access in Brazil, despite the ban. That was rectified very quickly; however, the court is planning to fine the company for the violation.

This comes for X at a time when the company is not doing well financially.
