Community Notes is a great feature on X that allows users to add context to posts. Now, the platform is expanding its Community Notes feature once again by adding the ability to request a note on posts that they believe must include a Community Note.
The above example images the new feature in action. It shows that there is now an option to “request community note” in the post menu on the desktop. Once, the note is requested on that post, it will be flagged for checking by community note contributors.
Here is how X explains it.
“People on X can request a Community Note on a post they believe would benefit from one. If there are enough requests, Community Notes contributors will see an alert, and can choose to propose a note. This gives people on X who are not contributors a way to help, and lets contributors know where notes might be found helpful.”
Anyone on the platform can make the request for community notes. However, there are some restrictions for requesting the notes.
To be able to request a community note, accounts must have a verified phone number. In the beginning, an account can only make up to 5 requests per day. This limit may increase if your requests are successful in contributing towards helpful notes. The number of requests can decrease as well if requests are on posts that people don’t agree to need a note. This is for preventing spam and keeping note writers focused on posts that could use helpful notes.
This could be a good way to dispel misinformation on the platform, by making it easier for users to seek out the note themselves. It adds a valuable feature to the process of the Community Notes system.
