Meta Orion AR Glasses: The Next Step in Augmented Reality for Everyday Life

| Updated on December 5, 2024

“Augmented reality is going to change the way we live, work, and interact with the world.”
— Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

I recently found out that Meta has finally introduced their first true augmented reality glasses. Isn’t it astonishing to think how glasses started out to correct vision, but now they have evolved and transformed into something so futuristic? In conjunction with augmented reality, glasses are now bridging the gap between the virtual and physical worlds.

Augmented navigation, hands-free communication, smart shopping, interactive entertainment, and whatnot, things that were once only possible in sci-fi movies are now a reality with Meta’s Orion AR Glasses. It won’t take much longer for this technology to become a part of our everyday life. It is expected that between  2023 and 2026, AR glasses revenue is predicted to increase by over 5x (ARtillery Intelligence)

But truly, what potential do the Orion glasses hold? How will they impact life as we know it? This is what we’ll answer in this article, so stick to the end and what AR glasses hold for the future.

Key Features of Meta Orion AR Glasses

It is no secret that several companies are exploring the AR glasses industry. You might remember several attempts from Google Glass to snap spectacles, approaching the AR market from different angles and presenting something new and greater with each innovation.

Now you might be thinking, what do the Meta Orion AR Glasses bring to the table? Well, they are set to push the boundaries of how we interact with technology in the physical world.

According to Meta’s official press release, these glasses are equipped with high-resolution lenses and sensors, which enable an interactive overlay of digital content onto the real environment. Let’s delve into some of its key features :

  • A 70-degree field of view: Compared to several VR headsets, the 70-degree field of view is rather limited. Some of these headsets have a 90-degree field of view. However, if we compare it to other AR glasses, such as the Snap Spectacles with an FOV of 46 degrees, then Meta’s Orion glasses will feel like a big screen.

The viewing area is spread out, although there are noticeable cut-offs on the edges. On the other hand, you get a 13-pixel-per-degree resolution, which is solid, but the Quest 3 headset offers a greater pixel density per degree at 25.

  • Multiple sensors: Meta’s Orion glasses feature a whole deal of sensors that will enhance your overall AR experience. For instance, you have eye-tracking cameras on either side of the lenses.

Additionally, there are more cameras on the outer frame of the glasses along with side cameras to capture hand motions and room tracking. Also included are microphones, speakers, and Wi-Fi 6 for internet connectivity.

  • EMG wristband: Working in tandem with the glasses is an electromyography (EMG) wristband. Designed for neural input, the wristband tracks neural signals sent from the brain to the fingers.

It then translates these signals into desired actions, with added haptic feedback to let you know it actually received and transmitted the signal. You might not get the most perfect and smooth gestures yet, but the technology is a clear indicator of what the future holds.

What’s even more interesting is that the wristband does all the processing. The design is also lightweight and practical, with a promising battery life that will easily get you through a day’s work.

  • The compute puck: Meta decided to share the computing power with a wireless compute puck. The puck acts as an external processor, feeding graphics and apps wirelessly to the glasses.

FUN FACTS
Google Glass was a wearable AR device that was discontinued in March 2023. It uses voice and motion controls to display information in the user’s field of vision.

Entertainment Possibilities Beyond the Screen

These Orion glasses are bound to change routine life, but if you think that is it, then you are certainly wrong. The entertainment sector is also poised to reap the benefits of AR technology

Meta envisions Orion as a device that can transform how we enjoy various forms of media, including interactive storytelling, and immersive game experiences that blend physical and virtual spaces.

A fantastic example is how AR could elevate live casino games by merging virtual casino environments with a user’s actual surroundings. Think of games like Monopoly Live Casino with Orion’s glasses, players can view game elements in 3D and interact with them as if they were physically present.

This immersive experience demonstrates AR’s potential to add a new layer of realism and excitement to online gaming.

Integrating AI Into Meta’s Orion Glasses

Do you remember the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses? They feature the Llama AI model, which adds more functionality and usability. As a result, Orion offers an intelligent, responsive, and adaptive user experience, thereby bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds. Now, you might ask what exactly does the AI integration include? The following two points answer this for you.

  • Contextual awareness: The Orion glasses can recognize and interpret the user’s environment to tailor a digital overlay to fit the context. For instance, if you are using it in a work setting, Orion might display relevant data, charts, or even notifications based on your tasks.
  • Enhanced interaction: It also includes AI-powered voice and gesture recognition features that allow users to control Orion intuitively. The system learns from user habits, improving its responsiveness and accuracy over time.

For instance, you can take hands-free video calls and send messages on several platforms. You can even dictate with your voice, or even enlist Orion’s assistance in identifying items.

DO YOU KNOW?
As of 2024, the global AR and VR smart glasses market was valued at $14.36 billion, and it is expected to reach $45.03 billion by 2031.

What Next for Meta’s Orion Glasses?

According to Meta, the Orion glasses are not available for mass consumption, and understandably so. The price and technology both need refinement.

Additionally, Meta stated it’s working on its overall size. For now, Orion is simply a complete prototype, giving us a glimpse into what the future of AR is like, even though we may just have to wait a while longer.

With that said, Meta’s Orion AR glasses can not be considered just a tech innovation. They represent a change in how to bridge the virtual and physical worlds. It’s about interaction with digital content.

Of course, there are several challenges, as described earlier. However, we are now living in the era of AR (Augmented Reality), with Orion by Meta the trailblazer. So, In the end, I would like to ask you, how do you see AR impacting your industry? Or better yet, your overall life?
