Meta has finally revealed its plans for the third-party chats in WhatsApp and Messenger. Now, both apps will be able to send and receive messages across platforms.
This change will be coming to the European Union soon. The company introduces new options to put Messenger and WhatsApp messages in the same inbox as third-party chats or keep them separate.
The company is building new notifications into Messenger and WhatsApp as well that will allow them to know when they can link chats from other supported apps. Meta is saying that the company has “gone above and beyond the ‘basic’ features required for interoperable messaging” and will offer other rich features like reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts.
The company also says that people will be able to create groups with other people from third-party chats starting next year. The mandatory interoperability goes beyond messaging. The company says that it will also add support for third-party video and voice calls in 2027.
Ever since the introduction of the Digital Services Act in the EU, the company has been working to bring third-party chats into WhatsApp and Messenger. The company had to comply with the new interoperability rules with third-party apps like iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages, Signal, and others.
Meta may have to overcome some hurdles as other companies are not using the same protocol. They will need other companies to use the same signal protocol to keep messages private. Meta says that they will make the signal protocol available for other companies when requested.
