Linus Torvalds has had enough of trying to fix Linus to work on Intel’s faulty processors. According to him, Linus isn’t broken, so why bother fixing it? According to him, Intel is the one that is to blame here.
He showed his frustration in a thread recently.
Linux creator, Linus Torvalds, expressed his frustration with the change proposals to the Linux kernel required due to faulty hardware.
Linus ranted on the Linux kernel mailing list over the past week and said that if the hardware is buggy, it should not be Linux’s problem. This suggests that he is telling the kernel developers to just say no and see what the hardware people have to say about that.
Linus said, “I think this time we push back on the hardware people and tell them it’s *THEIR* damn problem, and if they can’t even be bothered to say yay-or-nay, we just sit tight. Because dammit, let’s put the onus on where the blame lies, and not just take any random shit from bad hardware and say ‘oh, but it *might* be a problem’.”
According to this, he is unhappy with the kernel commits that address theoretical vulnerabilities, particularly those that are difficult to implement and have never been exploited.
He adds, “Honestly, I’m pretty damn fed up with buggy hardware and completely theoretical attacks that have never actually shown themselves to be used in practice.”
The problem for developers is that addressing faults at the OS level complicates matters for developers. It also creates potential compatibility issues with other fault-free hardware.
If we take a look at the example of a proposed kernel change that will not work with Linear Address Masking (LAM) on Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake Processors. This is precisely the reason why Linus is furious about this.
