X Backs Down in Brazil and Will Comply with Brazilian Censorship Demands

| Updated on 27 September 2024

After three weeks of back and forth with the Brazilian Government, X will comply with the Brazilian censorship demands.

X stood its ground against the Brazilian government’s order to censor certain users in the app. But now it looks like X will finally give in and comply with whatever the Brazilian government has been saying from day one.

According to new news, X has informed the Brazilian authorities that it will adhere to their requests late last week.

Earlier in April, the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered X to comply with government orders to suppress certain accounts. Brazilian leadership determined that these accounts have been spreading false rumors and hate speech. X took their stand by not taking any action on the request. At the time, X said that it was not legal under Brazilian law and also not legal within its new free speech moderation approach.

This has led to a standoff between the social media company and the Brazilian government. Things escalated so much that they had to evacuate their Brazil office as the authorities threatened to arrest the local representatives.

After that, they faced ban threats as well. A week after the ban threats, Brazil banned the app completely. X has more than 20 million users in Brazil, so a significant market for the social media company.

Now, after three weeks, X decided to take action on the Brazilian requests after all.

Here is what the New York Times said about it.

“In a court filing on Friday night, the company’s lawyers said that X had complied with orders from Brazil’s Supreme Court in the hopes that the court would lift a block on its site.

So, according to the report, the company has appointed an official representative in the country, a requirement of its operation in the nation. The X lawyers have also agreed to block the accounts submitted by the government.

X now has five days to file the official paperwork on this update. After this, X could restart their operations in Brazil by the end of next week.
