X is rolling out an update to the platform to start hiding the likes. After the announcement last month, the company will make all likes private in the app.
See this post from the X Engineering team.
Users will be able to see the posts they’ve liked but no one else. X believes that this will give people more freedom to engage with more content in the app.
Here is how an X engineer explained it last month.
“Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behavior. For example, many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be “edgy” in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image. Soon you’ll be able to like it without worrying who might see it.”
Now you can like edgy content without any worry about people finding out your activity on the platform at a later stage. That will also help the algo to know what you’re interested in. In the end, you’ll see more of such content in your feed.
The Verge reported that Elon Musk told the X engineers that he wanted to get rid of the tweet action buttons and place an emphasis on views. His goal was to remove the action buttons altogether as they were not that important.
Last month, X updated their policy on adult content on the platform, which now means that “consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior” is officially allowed in the app.
So, there is a possibility of the company setting up another potential revenue stream to enable adult content creators to monetize their uploads in the app.
From now on, you can like everything you want to, without any concerns about who’s going to see it.
