Procreate Takes Anti-AI Stance: Gets Praise from Digital Creatives

| Updated on 22 August 2024

Procreate, a popular iPad illustration app, has taken a stance against generative AI being introduced in every product. The CEO of Procreate, James Cuda, said “We’re not going to be introducing any generative AI into our products. I don’t like what’s happening to the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists.”

Here is the video shared by the Procreate team on X.

The creative community is not very happy about being AI introduced in every creative app. They don’t know that the AI models have been trained on their content without consent or compensation. They are also worried that widespread adaptation of the technology will greatly reduce employment opportunities.

People who are concerned about these issues have tried to find alternative solutions to apps that integrate generative AI tools, such as Adobe Photoshop.

On the AI page of their website, Procreate says, “Creativity is made, not generated.”

It also says, “Generative AI is ripping the humanity out of things. Built on a foundation of theft, the technology is steering us toward a barren future. We think machine learning is a compelling technology with a lot of merit, but the path generative AI is on is wrong for us.”

It further elaborated “We’re here for the humans. We’re not chasing a technology that is a moral threat to our greatest jewel: human creativity. In this technological rush, this might make us an exception or seem at risk of being left behind. But we see this road less travelled as the more exciting and fruitful one for our community.”

This announcement from the Procreate CEO has received widespread praise from creative professionals online who are discontent with how other companies have handled the situation. Another rival company, Clip Studio Paint, scrapped its plans to introduce image generation features after the announcement faced a lot of backlash from users.

Even Adobe wanted to take an ethical approach to generative AI. They said multiple times that their Firefly models are trained on content that is licensed or out of copyright. They also faced a lot of backlash from independent artists and creators who feel the company has turned its back on them.
