AI Overview Makes Obvious Errors: Users Criticize Google

| Updated on 28 May 2024

Social media is having fun with the Google AI Overview product saying weird stuff. It suggests users to eat rocks and put glue on their pizza.

It is a messy rollout to Google AI overview just like its other product Gemini Images. Now, Google is rushing to disable the AI overview manually for specific searches. This is the reason why many of these are disappearing from the search results as users post them on social media.

It is a very uncomfortable situation for Google since they’ve been testing the AI Overview for over a year. Google CEO, Sundar Pichai said that the company has served over a billion queries with AI Overview.

Several users, including journalists, have shared multiple examples of AI summaries from Google called “AI overview” citing doubtful sources including Reddit posts written as jokes, or failing to understand that the articles on the Onion aren’t based on facts.

In one example user asked, how many Muslim presidents the US has had, AI overview replied with Barack Obama. Check out the post on X below.

In an irony, when asked about whether Google Search violates antitrust law, AI Overview said, “Yes, the U.S. Justice Department and 11 states are suing Google for antitrust violations.”

A Google spokesperson told CNBC, “The vast majority of AI Overviews provide high-quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web. Many of the examples we’ve seen have been uncommon queries, and we’ve also seen examples that were doctored or that we couldn’t reproduce.”
