Discord to Give in to Ads After Shunning Them for Years

We all know that Discord has been trying to find new sources of income for the last few years. They’ve started with a subscription model called Nitro. This subscription model unlocked a few special features on the platform. Then they included the ability to gift people Nitro subscriptions, just like Twitch and other gaming streaming services people can gift subscribers.

Apart from this, the company also tried its hands on NFTs and purchased games. None of this has paid off for Discord as they are now looking into showing ads for financial freedom.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Discord users will begin to see advertisements appear on the platform in the coming week. Discord has kept advertisement at bay for so many years. But now with a large user base and extra expenditure on resources, Discord had to turn to ads.

The user base of Discord has become accustomed to the ad-free version, we don’t know how users will respond to this development. We hope that Discord will keep the advertisement to a minimum and relevant to its game-centric users.

According to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter claim that the company is hiring over a dozen people for the sales of implementing advertisements in the app.

Discord has confirmed that users will have the ability to turn off the ads in the settings. However, it is not clear if this setting is available to everyone or not, or if it will be behind a subscription wall.

Users have never experienced ads on the platform, now it will surely divide them. So, whether they will accept this development or rebel against it, only time will tell.
